Westford House B&B - Access Statement


Westford House was built approximately in 1820, and whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests, there are some period features which might make access difficult for people with limited mobility. We are a five-bedroom, four star bed and breakfast and this page is a summary of our business. If you have any specific questions please feel free to ask and we will endeavour to help. Please note that all measurements are approximate. 

There is no lift on the premises and guest rooms are not adapted for wheelchair users. Width of corridors and information on steps and stair heights is given below:

Main Entrance and Reception
Westford House is accessed through a wrought iron gate with 790mm opening and a slight step (30mm). There is a step (100mm) leading up to the front door with a further step (60mm) over the threshold; the door opening is 950mm. 

The inner doorway opening is 900mm leading into the entrance hall which is wooden flooring throughout providing access to the dining room, kitchen and stairway.

Dining room
The dining room, accessed from the entrance hallway on the ground floor is 3.6m x 3.7m (4.1m at bay) and the door opening is 810mm wide. It is carpeted with five tables 735mm high and chairs are without arms. Menus can be provided in large print by prior arrangement, but not in Braille. In addition to the main light, wall lights provide excellent lighting. There is a large sash window overlooking Church Street to the front of the house.

Guest Lounge
The guest lounge, located on the first floor, is 4.8m x 3.7m (4.4m at bay) and the door opening is 810mm wide. It is carpeted and has sofas and armchairs. The room has good natural lighting with an imposing window overlooking Church Street to the front of the house. The lounge is well equipped with a wide flat screen television, books & games for guest use and information about the islands and local activities available during your stay.

Access to Guest Bedrooms
We have a total of five guest bedrooms located as follows:

On the first floor (rear) landing   (accessible by a flight of 10 stairs)

Bedroom St.Agnes - Twin en-suite
Bedroom Samson - Twin/Double en-suite

On the first floor   (accessible by a further flight of 4 stairs)
Bedroom St.Martins - Double en-suite

On the Second floor   (accessible by a further flight of 17 stairs)
Bedroom Bryher - Double en-suite
Bedroom Tresco - Double en-suite

The staircase is 750mm wide with a fitted carpet and banister to the left hand side. Each stair is between 180mm & 200mm high and 270mm & 290mm deep.


Additional information

  • An induction loop system is not available.
  • There is no lift on the premises.
  • Guest rooms are not adapted for wheelchair users.
  • The width of corridors range from 740mm to 1150mm.
  • Beds can be made with sheets and blankets on request.
  • Because we do not allow animals the rooms are free of animal hair.
  • A fire risk assessment is available for inspection.
  • Emergency procedures in the event of fire are displayed in guest rooms.
  • There is an automatic fire alarm with smoke detector in each room - please let us know if you might not hear the alarm.
  • Fire extinguishers are located; entrance hall, kitchen, first & second floor landings. 
  • We are a non-smoking premises.
