Westford House B&B - Environmental Statement

The Isles of Scilly is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which makes us at Westford House B&B, very aware of our impact on the environment. We are committed to ensuring that this impact is kept to a minimum whilst offering our guests a good service.

Energy use
Radiators are thermostatically controlled and the central heating is timed. Water is metered. We have had a thermo voltaic solar energy array installed. That translates to "solar panels" for you and me! This does not supply all our energy needs but supplements our consumption and reduces our dependence on the national grid, in turn reducing our carbon footprint and therefore our impact on the environment. Solar heated water is next on the list to be installed.

Waste and Recycling
Recycling facilities are limited on Scilly. Glass is crushed and used in the building industry; kitchen waste is composted and food and drink cans can be re-cycled.

Laundry
To help reduce water, electricity and detergent use, guests are given the option of having towels washed and bedding changed only as required. We line dry our laundry.

Food
Wherever possible we buy our food and produce locally, supporting the local economy and reducing food miles as much as possible. Our eggs & honey come from free range hens at Hicks Farm on St. Agnes. Our marmalade is locally made on St.Marys.  When available, fruit and vegetables grown locally are used. Sausages and bacon are sourced from Cornwall. Breakfast pre-order chits help us reduce food wastage.

How you can help :-

  • Turn out lights when not in use.
  • Switch off appliances at sockets.
  • Do not leave water running unnecessarily.
  • If you have any cans or bottles please leave these out for recycling, rather than placing in waste bins.
  • Turn off radiators when not in use.
  • If you want your towels washed please place them in the shower or bath.
  • For guests staying seven days or more, beds are usually changed every four days unless otherwise requested. If you do not feel this is necessary please let us know.
